Travelers Can Enjoy Outdoor Recreation, Historic, Water and Performing Arts Events This Summer in the Lakes to Locks Passage

Travelers can enjoy over 600 experiences, sites and attractions recommended by locals in Northern New Yorks Lakes to Locks Passage this summer. From outdoor recreation to history-themed events, the Lakes to Locks Passage offers visitors a scenic landscape laden with history and beauty. The Lakes to Locks Passage, New Yorks Great Northeast Journey, offers four story-filled regions that connect Lake Champlain and Lake George with the Champlain Canal and Hudson River to the south and the Chambly Canal to the Richelieu and St. Lawrence Rivers of Quebec to the north.

Outdoor Recreation

Miles of multi-purpose trails can be experienced by foot, bike, boat, kayak, canoe, train, motorcycle and automobile. The region stretches from Albany to Quebec along the interconnected waterways of the Hudson River, Champlain Canal, Lake George and Lake Champlain and includes Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Washington, Warren, Essex and Clinton Counties. Visitors can discover The Great Northern Turnpike, a self-guided itinerary that takes travelers through the scenic and rural landscape that inspired artists such as Norman Rockwell and Grandma Moses. Tourists can explore hiking trails and historic walking tours of intact 19th century towns, villages and hamlets. Visitors can enjoy the La Chute River Walk Interpretive Trail, which celebrates the extraordinary variety of industries clustered around the waterfalls and rapids on the La Chute River between Lake George and Lake Champlain. New Yorks Adirondack Park weaves in and out of the corridor, offering plentiful opportunities for hiking its 46 high peaks among many other options.

Historic Events and Sites

The celebration of the War of 1812 Bicentennial Continues with the War of 1812 Boot Camp. The War of 1812 Boot Camp is a unique opportunity for people of all ages to get an experiential understanding of this important time in history. Visitors can enjoy reenactments firsthand. The Sword Surrender Site, 6 miles north of Saratoga Battlefield on Rt. 4, is the newest part of Saratoga National Historical Park. Here, on October 17, 1777, British General John Burgoyne ceremoniously handed over his sword to American General Horatio Gates, ending the Battles of Saratoga in Americas favor and beginning an international war. The park also hosts a 75th Anniversary event on June 22nd and its annual citizenship ceremony and reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th.

The North Star Underground Railroad Museum is open 7 days a week, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., through October and admission is free. Located in Ausable Chasm, NY, the museum brings to life the stories of men, women and children who traveled on the Lake Champlain Corridor of the Underground Railroad before the Civil War and the local families who hid the fugitives, many of them headed to Canada. The Old Fort House Museum Celebration of Heritage Days will be held June 28th and 29th in Fort Edward, NY. The Old Fort House had many roles during the Revolutionary War and the time period after, including visits from Presidents George Washington and James Monroe.

This summers Saratoga Race Course thoroughbred season will celebrate 150 years of racing with a five-month festival called Saratoga 150. Over 150 events will be held May-September.

Cultural Events and Festivals

The third annual Lake George Music Festival will be held August 16th-22nd in the town of Lake George. The participating musicians work closely together in a tight-knit community performing daily open rehearsals and free public concerts to the seasonal and year round residents of Lake George. Saratoga Springs offers visitors a wide range of cultural events during the summer, including performances by the New York City Ballet, The Philadelphia Orchestra, modern dance companies, Opera Saratoga, the Saratoga Jazz Festival, Live Nation Concerts and much more at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Hubbard Hall, a performing arts venue in Cambridge, NY, offers performances, concerts, workshops and much more in a historic 1878 rural opera house designed by the same renowned architect who created the Troy Music Hall.

Events On The Water

The Mayor’s Cup Festival and Regatta, to be held July 11th-14th, is Plattsburgh’s most time-honored and highly anticipated summer tradition on Lake Champlain. The four-day celebration includes the Boat Parade of Lights, 36th Annual Regatta, Post-Race BBQ and Award’s Ceremony, as well as live music, family arts and childrens activities, a spectacular fireworks display and much more. The Lake George Association will hold a Floating Classroom on July 19th. From earthquakes and glaciers, to storm water and invasive species, come aboard the Floating Classroom to learn all about Lake George and how to keep its water clean and clear. On board, visitors will enjoy a hands-on adventure and learn all about Lake George water quality.

The web site, a collaborative effort with National Geographic, is based on the principles of Geotourism, which is defined as tourism that contributes to the economic health of communities by enhancing the geographical character of a place its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage and well-being of its residents.

Over 600 experiences for visitors, all recommended by locals, are featured on the website. Through a collaboration with National Geographic, visitors can pinpoint places of interest on a map and then learn about the regions nature, history, special events and outdoor experiences.
